The guide offers many different activities with instructions that are “Open & Go!” and also schedules others from the resource set that make it easy to keep students busy with little to no prep. The History Study in This Program
This guide pulls together the resources to follow medieval history from the Roman empire to the Renaissance and Reformation. The journey starts with the time of the apostles and the beginnings of Christianity, including Paul’s ministry and missionary journeys. The study follows church history from the establishment of the Church at Pentecost to its Reformation at the end of the Middle Ages.
Students will be there to witness the decline and fall of Rome and see the rise of the Eastern Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire. They’ll see Islam spread, and check in with cultures in the Far East: India, Japan, and China.
When the trip East is done, students will experience daily life in the Middle Ages, looking in on the cultures of Europe. They’ll see the lives of Europeans turned upside-down by the Vikings, and meet rulers in England. Students will set out on the Crusades, witness the Mongol invasions, and travel to the Far East with Marco Polo. They’ll be there to see the devastation of the Hundred Years’ War, the Black Death, and the Fall of Constantinople.
As the year goes on, they’ll peek in on the work of Renaissance greats like Johannes Gutenberg, Petrarch, Machiavelli, Giotto, Botticelli, Michelangelo, Brunelleschi, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Medicis. The year finishes with students observing how the Reformation changed the world and divided Europe for generations. They’ll meet the people who influenced church history and thought during that period, and watch monarchs like Charles V and Henry VIII make decisions that set nations on a religious course that forever changed their histories.
